I sorta kinda was finally agreeing to it. But only to get Chris to shut up.
Chris has wanted a dog for months. And he would beg and plead and send me puppy links and pictures and emails and classifieds.
So the week before my birthday we went to a couple of shelters and didn't find "the one"
I wanted a lab because we had a boy lab before and I loved his face off. Chris didn't because it would get "too big"
We went again on my birthday and ended up adopting an unknown mix puppy. (um happy birthday)?
We named him Indiana Bones and called him Indy.
That was 10 days ago. In 10 days, we learned that he was a biter. and mean. and aggressive. And G and him could not be friends. Chris took him to the vet and the vet said he looked like a pit mix.
Then after 7 days of talking about whether Indy was the right fit for us, he lunged at G's face and tried to bite his cheek yesterday. Twice.
We took him back where we adopted him.
And went and picked up a pure yellow lab baby girl.
Yes - I feel like the worst doggy mother ever.
But I hope that she's "the one"

They were both cute, but you can't have a biter. We had to take a dog back to the shelter once. When he growled and lunged at me the romance was over.
It's more important that G is safe and the dog integrates into the family well. If you had kept aggressive puppy, you would all be miserable including puppy, so don't beat yourself up. He'll find another home that works for him. New baby girl is beautiful!!
u cant have a aggressive dog ..hope the new dog works out better :)
I won't even go into how many dogs we've had in the 5 years that paul and I have been married, but Paul has forbidden me to have anymore for a while. Kinda like when you meet 'the one' and you get married, same thing w/a dog...you just kinda know.
That first doggie was a cutie, but then so was that damn toy poodle I got and then hated. I LOVE dogs...I hated that damn toy poodle. I have never hated an animal like I did that poodle. It was hard headed, and constantly pushing my buttons...would not stop biting at you no matter what kind of disciplinary actions were taken, and if you were to get up at anytime in the middle of the night to pee...he started whining and barking and wanting out too. I lasted 6 weeks with it, and then I had to get rid of him.
We haven't had a dog since. I am getting back my dog, that I got when I lived at home. Now that we live in a house, I can take care of him. He's been living with my Parent's for the last 5 years. He's sweet and obedient and I've never met or had another doggy like him.
I hope the yellow lab works out...it's definitely cute! I want a golden retriever :)
OH MAH GAH!
INDIANA BONES!!! That's the best name EVAH!
Anyway. The lab looks like a little angel!
I am totally not a dog person but I love puppy #2. What's her name? She reminds me of the one dog we had- her name was Jovi (like Bon Jovi LOL) but Mia was a toddler and called her Goggy and Guppy (doggy and puppy) and Guppy stuck.
Most dogs can be trained out of aggressive behavior, but with a child in the house...yeah, that's a risk.
Goldens are generally not aggressive, very loving, and great with kids. They're intelligent, but do be wary of pressing on her hips at all as they tend to develop arthritis and hip dysplacia (however you spell it) as a genetic trait of the breed. Also, they are water dogs and have a tendency to 'soft mouth' things. What's her name??
*faceplam* I read 'yellow lab' as 'golden retriever'. D'oh! Well, similar things apply at any rate!
Yep. Face lunge would've sealed the deal for me. No way!
This brought tear to my eyes. What a sweet looking pup but I would never have a part pit bull so you made a great decision!!! Don't feel bad at all, your first priority is the safety of G. You know we had a yellow lab who had 12 pups and we kept one also. They are by far the best dogs around for children. I just couldn't handle the shedding anymore so we went with smaller non shedding pups after them. We had Abby and Zack. Again if you want any help let me know. What a precious little lady she is. I am doing the happy dance :)
Yeah, it's better that you took the first one back before you got too attached to it and before something worse happened.
We had a rescue that was a fear biter but my husband was a dog handler in the army, I'm a vet tech, and we don't have kids. So there ARE people that will take a pup like Indy. Someone will adopt him I'm sure.
In time the puppy could have grown out of it, but with a toddler one doesn't always have that time. Hopefully someone else will take him in and teach him and he'll find a home better suited.
Hope the sweet little girl is a good fit, she seems cute and goldens are usually pretty mild mannered. :)
labs are the best dogs. You should have got a lab in the first place anyway. Have fun with your new puppy.
You done good! No worries......
Aw. It's okay, some dogs aren't a fit for the family.
I had to give away my most favorite dog because he bit my baby in the face. I cried and cried and still cry if I let myself think about it too much or suddenly see a dog that looks like him. But when a dog tries to bite your child, it's time to find a new home for that dog. As much as we love them, they're not human and they're not truly our children and our human children do have to come first.
Best of luck with the new dog! xoxo
It's a pity that first pup wasn't friendly. He really was a cutie pie.
I'm glad we got our pup before we had kids. He would have been a terrible puppy to have with little kids around. When he was teething he would bite EVERYTHING. He wasn't being mean or anything, but man those baby teeth were sharp.
I hope your pretty girl works out much better. I've always loved labs. They are so loveable.
the new pup is a much better choice than a pit mix. there is just something in that breed that ultimately "snaps" most of the time. there are the few good ones, but in my opinion it is rare.
i had some really good friends who always had pitbulls and was an advocate for the whole "not the breed it's the people who raise them" thing.
then i watched one of their pits lunge across the yard and take their toddler down by the head killing her. seeing something like that changes you forever.
do NOT feel badly for following your motherly instincts.
Thats scary. Glad you realize before you got attached and he got bigger. Hope G's okay. Your puppy is too cute!! Hope he works out for you all!
What is yellow girls name?
Indiana bones is hard to top.
You did the right thing. Gotta put your son first. Indy will be the right fit for another family.
